Interesting to note that Goresdale seems to have primarily adopted the bottom as the area of chastisement for young ladies  in contrast  to   hand caning believed to be prevalent in most schools at this time.. Is there any indication of their ages at the time punishment was inflicted.. One assumes they were quite junior when subject to an OTK spanking

Eastway also appears to have no issues wit chastising bottys ..And more OTK   which is not that usual in senior schools.

So far I have only found 3 cases of SCP being administered to female pupils at Eastway Secondary.  However, 2 of them clearly state they were punished on the bottom.  Firstly Angela recalls:

‘I got the cane on the bum by Mrs Girvan for forging a note to get out of PE. I didn’t know they had phoned Mum for permission first and when I got home I got a whack across the face for getting in trouble’

Whether or not her Mum had specifically requested that Angela be punished on her bottom or if this was Eastway or Mrs Girvan/Garvin’s Modus Operandi I have not yet ascertained.  The other account of Mrs Girvan/Garvin applying the cane was mentioned by Elaine on 2 separate occasions.  The first being:

‘Does anyone remember “think it was ms Irvine?” Massive women who did cookery? She gave me the cane twice !’
Another former pupil then gave her the name of Garvin, and she reiterated:

‘ah yes thought her name was Irvine! She bloody caned me twice! She did look like she was from the army’.

Regarding the alleged over-the-knee spanking.  Lynda recalls:

‘Mr Riley (science) put me over his knee and slapped my arse!!  (I was apparently disrupting the class by talking to my mate). Can you imagine the scenes now!!’

Interestingly, although compared to other forms of SCP over the knee spankings at secondary schools appear to be very rare (I think I have come across 4 cases).  These have all have been towards the tail end of the SCP era in either 70s or 80s.  I would have thought that this form of punishment would have been more common in the 1950s and 1960s.  Of course, it could just be that ladies who were in secondary education during this period and received such punishment are less likely to speak up.

In reference to the over-the-knee spankings at Goresdale Middle I have not been able to ascertain their ages so it could have been anywhere between 9 and 12.

Here is Shirley’s account:

‘Four of my friends and I got bent over the headmasters knee and got spanked in front of two Pakistani ladies for standing outside their house making banshee screams’

This was supported by Tracy who added:

‘yes, by the dirty old pervert headmaster Walsh’

On reflection, if this is accurate then it is very interesting.  I think the only other account I’ve read of any pupil receiving SCP in front of a member of public was in Roald Dahl’s autobiography which would have been around 50 years earlier.  Perhaps ‘receiving SCP in front of a member of the public’ deserves a thread of its own.

With regard to male teachers carrying out dubious, controversial and possibly pruriently motivated corporal punishments on female students as late as the 1970s you asked above:

How did they get away with that in that era?

Had it not been for an altercation with a headmaster over a beard I might well have been a teacher in the 1970s and I can think of at least three ways this might be accomplished with relative safety and freedom from suspicion of unprofessional behaviour.  Not that I would have indulged in it of course!

1. Be a very long-standing and senior teacher regarded alike by school senior management and by parents as highly competent and as being motivated by nothing but the absolute best of motives for successful pupil outcomes.  Hard work to attain and maintain an easily lost reputation and would probably only permit a few examples of deviant SCP.
2. Be what I call a ‘bread and circuses’ teacher.  One who, like the Roman Emperors, used goodies and entertainments such as punishments to keep the Roman mob sorry, the other pupils amused and suitably well behaved and compliant with at least a modicum of imparted learning.  In this case you could get away with it quite often, but it was essential not too punish too hard and to devise equally embarrassing punishments for both males and females in mixed classes.
3. Use psychology and acute observation, together with carefully developed and modulated interpersonal techniques to select and engage with your target.  Very much the techniques as practised by fraudsters throughout the ages and latterly by computer hackers to gain useful non-digital information.  Using this technique required selecting a pupil who wasn’t too shy or too belligerent, whose parents or guardians had been assessed at parent/teacher meetings as appreciative of a teacher’s disciplinary role and not unduly likely to make trouble, and most of all a pupil who had with reasonable certainty committed an infraction they’d probably rather not discuss with their parents.  If using this technique to target girls for pruriently motivated punishments in a mixed school it was probably best to be known as someone who whacked at least a few boys too.
